My favourite and most used kitchen appliance is my food processor. I use the Kitchenaid 13 cup food processor. If I could only have one appliance this would be it. It is the appliance I use almost every day. It’s the appliance I would leave permanently on my kitchen island if my partner did not have a different opinion on that subject.
Now the Kitchenaid food processors are definitely not the cheapest ones around but they are definitely worth the price in my opinion. There is also a more affordable 9 cup and 11 cup food processor. I would recommend going with the 11 cup or 13 cup food processor if your budget permits it.
My second most used kitchen appliance would be my Kitchenaid stand mixer. I use the artisan stand mixer. I have had this mixer for about 2 years now and it has been well worth it’s money. For me personally the value has been in the attachments that are available for the Kitchenaid stand mixers. Below I will list the attachments I use on a regular basis.
The mixer also has a few downsides, before we moved to Melbourne it lived on my kitchen counter. Since our move it now lives in a drawer and I have definitely noticed that it is a struggle to get it our of the drawer and move it on to the counter. If you don’t have any space on your kitchen bench just make sure you are able (and willing to) carry the mixer. Personally for me it is worth it however I am definitely looking forward to having a kitchen where I can leave it on the bench at all times.
The second recommendation would be to immediately get a flex edge beater with the mixer. It’s the same as the usual beater however it has a flexible silicone edge which wipes down the sides of the bowl. It makes mixing things a lot quicker and easier and I was a bit disappointed that such an expensive mixer did not come with the flex edge beater standard included. The mixer retails for $800 in Australia and the extra beater is $60 which I would have rather spend on other things.
When it comes to attachments the most used attachment for me would be the citrus juicer attachment. I use fresh lemon juice in a lot of my recipes and I got sick of having to squeeze lemons every time I wanted to cook something. To avoid this issue I have started to juice a big bag of lemons on Sunday and then I store them in the fridge, it make my life a lot easier and the juicer definitely gets a lot more juice out of the lemon a lot quicker then I can do it by hand.
My second most used attachment is the food processor attachment. I bought this before I bought my actual food processor. My main use for it now is to slice and dice things. The only reason I use this over my food processor is because it is a lot less of an effort to have to clean it.
It is also a great way to get some of the functionalities of a food processor on a budget if you already own the stand mixer.
I also own the pasta press for the stand mixer. I don’t use this attachment often but when I do I use it to make massive batches of pasta. I will usually make a really large batch of pasta to dry and then store and then I will make another batch when I run out.
The pasta press is my way of making pasta because it is so simple, all you do is put dough in the top and somehow pasta appears at the bottom like magic.
The least used attachment I have but once I could not live without is the ice cream maker attachment. The only reason I didn’t use it often is because it has to be frozen in advance of making ice cream. Up until about two months ago we had a tiny fridge and freezer and the ice cream maker would take up half the freezer. Now that we have upgraded our fridge my ice cream maker lives in there so I can use it whenever I need it.
One other frequently used appliance is my stick mixer. Before I had a food processor I used this to complement my stand mixer food processor. Since I have gotten the food processor it has been subjected to one task only and that is immersion blending liquids. I prefer using my stick mixer for this purpose to avoid having to transfer hot liquids as I am certain to burn myself.
Last but not least is my espresso machine. All I have to say is Espresso Martini’s. It’s a good thing those are vegan.
